Canada’s Top Bing Searches for 2013

What did Canada search for in 2013? Based on the aggregation of millions of search queries, we are unveiling the top search trends of Canadians in 2013.

Here’s what we found:

Most Searched Person of the Year

• Twerking her way to the top: Miley Cyrus becomes the most searched person in Canada this year.
• Canada doubles down on the Kardashians in 2013. It appears Kim Kardashian isn’t enough and we welcome Kourtney Kardashian into the top 10. Are three Kardashians a possibility for 2014?
• Women dominated in 2013 with eight of the ten most searched people of the year being women – only two men made it into the top ten: Justin Beiber (#4) and Blake Shelton (#9).

· Top 10 comparison for 2012 and 2013 in Canada:

• Have Canadians found the collective cure to Bieber fever? Unlikely. Yes, he did drop from #1 to #4 but it still appears the cure is nowhere in sight.
• The birth of the royal baby ensured Kate Middleton not only remained in the top 10, but jumped to the #2 spot overall. And Canadian searchers seemed much less interested in her husband, as Prince William came in at #55.

Most Searched Person of the Year: Canada versus the United States

• The cross-border battle between the Kardashians: Kim and Kourtney (#5 and #8 in Canada) versus Kim (#2 in the United States).
• Barack Obama cracks the top ten in the US; and regardless of your political leanings, I don’t believe Stephen Harper exudes the kind of charisma his American counterpart possesses – thereby making a future entry into the Canadian top 10 unlikely.
• The only people to grace both lists are Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus and Amanda Bynes (all placing higher in Canada than in the United States); and Kim Kardashian (placing lower in Canada than in the United States)

Most Searched Sports Stars

• When it comes to the world of sports, sometimes a little controversy goes further than actual on-field excellence. In this case, at least half of the top 10 are on this list for the wrong reasons: Lance Armstrong, Aaron Hernandez, Lamar Odom, Tim Tebow and Kris Humphries.
• Last year’s most searched sports star, Lance Armstrong, dropped to #3 in 2013.
• No stranger to controversy himself, Tiger Woods and his quest to win another major came in as the most searched athlete for the year – he was the runner up in 2012.
• Under the heading of “not a surprise to any living Canadian sports fan” superstar Sidney Crosby is the most searched NHL player (#6 overall).
• There’s a new queen in town for 2013, as Danica Patrick took over the reins from previous winner, Serena Williams, as the most searched female athlete (#2 overall). Whereas Williams – now the runner-up among female athletes – dropped to #10 overall.
• Lebron James proved to be “King” of the hardwood by finishing as the most searched NBA player (#8 overall). Last year he was edged out by Kobe Bryant but, unsurprisingly, back-to-back championships tends to elevate an elite player’s popularity.

· In hockey mad Canada is anyone surprised that NHL teams represent nine of the top 10 teams searched this year? The only exception: Canada’s sole MLB squad.

Most Searched Musicians

• When it comes to music (and relationship drama and controversy), Miley Cyrus is queen as the most searched musician of 2013.
• Bieber fever continues to burn allowing him to come in as the second most searched musician of 2013 – matching his exact spot in 2012.
• British sensation One Direction joined the list of top ten most searched musicians debuting at the #6 spot.
• Who would have guessed that a music video containing naked women, ice cream and feet would propel this performer into the #9 slot? Well, probably Robin Thicke – who holds dual (U.S./Canadian) citizenship.

• Robin Thicke – who holds dual (U.S./Canadian citizenship) – is responsible for this year’s most popular track in Canada.

Most Searched Movies

• Anticipation and buzz around this highly anticipated franchise reboot propelled ‘Man of Steel’ to the number one spot in 2013.
• Comic books adaptations continued to drive searches with ‘Man of Steel’ at #1 and ‘Iron Man 3’ at #2.
• Staying true to our nation’s comedic roots, oddball comedy ‘This Is the End’ lands in the top 10 (#7 overall).
• Despite the fact it’s the sixth installment in the franchise, apparently there’s no slowing down the ‘Fast and Furious’ series as it managed to sneak into the top 10 (#9 overall).

Most Searched Tech

• What’s on our mind, Facebook? Oh, just that our friends still “like” you the most. Facebook came in as the most searched tech destination for the second year in a row.
• Pinterest is not only a newcomer to the tech top ten list, it rocketed to the number six spot! From wedding ideas to recipes, people couldn’t seem to get enough of Pinterest in 2013.
• With new original series and more viewers than ever before, Netflix was the king of entertainment this year.

Most Searched Electronics

• With the upcoming launch of Xbox One, Xbox came in as the most searched entertainment electronic over Blackberry #2 and iPad #3.

Most Searched Fashion Designer

• The fashion industry was as competitive as ever in 2013, but fashion icon, designer and Project Runway judge, Michael Kors, took the crown as most searched fashion designer of 2013.
• An all-time favorite – and best known for his polo clothing brand – Ralph Lauren took sixth for the most search designer of 2013.
• A staple of the fashion industry, both Gucci and Chanel remained strong in 2013 coming in at #5 and #9, respectfully.

Most Searched Destination

• Stealing the spotlight from mainland America, Hawaii captured the top spot this year as the most searched destination in the world.
• Paris ruled the pack among European destinations (#7), with London following closely behind (#9).
